Individual Counselling
Weekly counselling sessions for adults, in person or online, to help with challenges such as low self-esteem, relationship problems, anxiety, past trauma, illness, loss and bereavement.
Individual Counselling
Choosing a therapist can be confusing; there are so many different approaches and terms used. The most important thing is to choose someone you feel you can trust and talk to about your experiences.
I aim to offer a safe space where you can explore what is happening for you, openly and without judgement. Together we can identify the issues, patterns or relationships that might be causing you distress; look at the influence of past experience on what is happening now; consider any changes that you may want to make and examine what gets in the way. I see it as a joint exploration, rather than me telling you what to do.
I offer weekly appointments in person at my garden office in Ashton Keynes (near Cirencester, Swindon, Cricklade, and Malmesbury). I also work online, so I can see you without the time or cost of travel, wherever you live. I work with anyone over 18, with no upper limit.
Counselling appointments last for 50 minutes and would be at the same time each week. I don’t limit the number of sessions; we would decide together how long it is helpful for you to do counselling.
I charge £55 per session, or £60 for evenings (after 5pm). The first session should help to clarify what you are looking for, and you are free to decide afterwards whether I am the right counsellor for you. Experience suggests that this is a more helpful way to make the decision than phoning or emailing with questions. That said, you are of course welcome to phone or email with any questions.
Why seek counselling?
You may be thinking about counselling for many reasons; I believe that most people can and do find counselling helpful, so I don’t limit my work to a single issue. That said, one or some of these below may strike a chord with you:
You’re trying to come to terms with a loss: a death, illness, life-changing health condition
You’re considering or going through a big change in life (eg: retirement, kids leaving home, career change, relationship breakdown, relocation, becoming a parent). Whether chosen or not, positive or negative, change can be hard.
You’re feeling tearful, sad, desperate, unwell, or as if ‘I can’t go on like this’
You may feel depressed, anxious, confused, stuck – and perhaps not know why, or what to do about it
You may feel angry, or as if life’s not fair, or that you always get a raw deal
You may have a feeling of not liking or valuing yourself very much. Perhaps you have a habit of putting others’ needs first, or not expecting to be treated well
You may be wanting to address or make sense of things that happened in the past. Perhaps abuse, trauma, difficult family relationships. Things that happened long ago can (and often do) affect us all our lives
You may be struggling in a relationship, perhaps with a partner or family member. Or perhaps the same pattern occurs in lots of your relationships, and you’d like this to be different
You may be wrestling with questions of meaning, what am I doing, what is the point, ‘is this… it?’ Counselling isn’t just about handling tragedy or crisis, though of course it is for that too. It can also be a positive step to finding meaning, following passions, finding fulfilment, and understanding what gets in the way
Whatever your reason for seeking counselling, it can help you to understand yourself better, and to feel better equipped and confident to make the changes that are important to you.

I don’t offer free or discounted first sessions, because experience shows that a first counselling session is important and valuable, whether or not you decide to continue working with me. It should help to clarify what you are looking for, and there is no obligation; you are free to decide afterwards whether I am the right counsellor for you.

I believe counselling can help with any or all of these things, and more. My approach is to work with you as a whole person, recognising that the issues you bring touch all aspects of your life, and I trust that the counselling process will go where it needs to go. For that reason, I don’t advertise a specialism, or limit my work to people with a single issue.
I would say that if you are looking for specific support with an eating disorder, or to overcome addiction, then I am probably not the best counsellor for you; in these cases, it can be useful to work with someone who has done additional specialist training.
