Caroline Hukins, Writing & Therapy | Counsellor, writer, group facilitator, and trainer based in North Wiltshire

Hello, I’m Caroline

I am an MBACP Accredited humanistic and integrative counsellor offering a safe, non-judgemental space for you to explore your experiences and challenges. I offer professional counselling for individuals and couples, available in-person at my garden home office in Ashton Keynes, North Wiltshire, as well as online and via email.

My approach combines person-centred, psychodynamic, and relational theories, tailored to your unique needs. Together, we’ll explore how past experiences may be influencing your present, examine patterns in your relationships, and identify any changes you’d like to make. I also offer creative writing as a therapeutic tool, which can be incorporated if it feels helpful for you.

Learn more about the types of counselling I offer below.

Individual Counselling

Choosing a therapist can feel confusing, with so many approaches and terms to consider. What matters most is finding someone you feel able to trust and talk to openly about your experiences.

I offer a safe, supportive space to explore what is happening for you without judgement. Together we might look at issues, patterns, or relationships causing distress, consider the influence of past experiences, or explore any changes you’d like to make and what may be getting in the way. I see counselling as a shared exploration, rather than me telling you what to do.

People come to counselling for many reasons: coping with loss, managing life changes, struggling with low mood, anxiety, anger or self-worth, making sense of past experiences, or improving relationships. It can also be a way of exploring questions of meaning and fulfilment. Whatever brings you, counselling offers a space to understand yourself better and feel more confident moving forward.

I offer weekly 50-minute appointments, either in person at my garden office in Ashton Keynes (near Cirencester, Swindon, Cricklade, and Malmesbury) or online if you prefer the convenience of meeting from home. I work with adults over 18, with no upper age limit, and there is no fixed number of sessions; we can decide together what feels most helpful.

Sessions cost £55, or £60 for evenings (after 5pm). The first session is a chance to clarify what you’re looking for and decide whether I’m the right counsellor for you. Experience suggests this is more useful than phone or email alone, though you’re of course welcome to get in touch with any questions beforehand.

Couples Counselling

I offer counselling for couples and partnerships of any kind, at any stage of their relationship. It can also be suitable for a parent and an adult child seeking to improve their relationship or communication.

My role is to create a safe, balanced space where difficult issues can be talked about openly and constructively, ensuring both parties feel heard and understood.

You may bring a specific issue, an ongoing pattern of unhelpful communication, or a sense of being ‘stuck’ in the same arguments or ways of relating to one another. What we do will be shaped by what you bring, and may include direct questions, space for each of you to speak and listen, or encouragement to talk directly to one another with me as witness. We may also agree on tasks to try between sessions if helpful.

Counselling can explore both the issues causing a problem (such as an affair, family crisis, or significant life change) and the dynamics between you (including how you communicate, how arguments unfold, how you reconnect afterwards).

Counselling is not guaranteed to preserve a relationship, and that is not always the goal. My intention is to work with you to find a positive way forward together or come to a respectful agreement about an alternative.

I usually see couples weekly at a fixed time, though there is flexibility if work or other commitments make this difficult, which we can discuss in the first session.

Email Counselling

Email counselling can be a valuable alternative to weekly in-person appointments, particularly if fixed times or travel are a barrier. It allows you to write when it feels most helpful; perhaps when free of commitments, when things feel especially difficult, or when your mind is clear and you can better express yourself.

Many people find writing easier than talking face-to-face, and the act of putting thoughts into words can bring relief and clarity, whether you are working through current challenges or past experiences.

Writing the privacy of in your own space gives you time to reflect on what you want to say, and receiving a therapeutic response in return can be powerful, offering insight and validation. You will also have a written record to revisit and process in your own time.

You would send me an email whenever you are ready, and within an agreed time period (usually a week) I will reply with a therapeutic response of around an hour’s work. As a guide, 800 words works well for your emails, though this is flexible. We can agree a set number of exchanges or keep it open-ended. I charge £50 per response, with some flexibility depending on circumstances and the length of our agreement.

Email counselling can be especially helpful for people with irregular working hours, those managing anxiety, depression, illness or limited mobility, anyone unable to travel easily, or expats seeking support in their own language.

Working with me feels…

Word cloud with words like warm, open, kind, welcoming, exploratory, encouraging, inspiring, connected, non-judgemental, creative, and engaging.
